Preventing Transmission Problems with your Honda

The automatic transmission is a complicated beast and is prone to problems. Any repair to an automatic transmission can be complicated and expensive. The following steps can help prevent transmission problems in many cases:

  • Regularly look at your driveway or parking spot for transmission leaks.
  • Change the fluid as your owner’s manual suggests. Also change it out when it becomes too dark or dirty. Another reason to change it often it, you can only change about 65% of the fluid at any one time because there is always transmission fluid left in parts like the torque converter.
  • Never shift to reverse or park while the car is moving forward.
  • Always make sure to be holding down the brake when shifting from park to drive or reverse.

Symptoms:

  • Code 740
  • Overheated converter

Cause:

  • The main pressure regulator valve allows limited fluid to flow to the converter and cooler. The limited flow of charge oil crossing in front of the TCC piston allows the clutch to drag, creating the overheat condition.

Correction:

  • Ensure sufficient converter charge flow by installing Sonnax converter charge regulated pressure regulator valve.

Symptoms:

  • Low CPC Pressure
  • Soft & inconsistent shift feel
  • Various concerns depending on location of leaking end plug

Cause:

  • Worn, eroded end plugs allow loss of critical hydraulic pressure.

Correction:

  • Sonnax O-ringed end plugkit restores correct circuit pressures. The O-ringed end plugs provide additional sealing to prevent hydraulic loss.

Honda/Acura models equipped with a four- or five-speed automatic transmission may overheat the converter. Insufficient flow to the TCC release circuit at low RPM allows the lockup piston to drag on the cover, generating heat.

This heat glazes the TCC lining and overheats the fluid. Eventually the slip rate cannot be controlled due to lining failure, resulting in code P0740. To prevent this problem, Sonnax offers a drop-in converter charge regulated pressure regulator valve 98892-04K.

This valve allows more flow to the converter and cooler circuits, increasing converter charge during low pump output conditions, and includes an internal checkball to prevent converter drain back when the vehicle is off. The same valve design will assist converter charge and TCC apply pressure during low-output/high-load demand situations.
